Mary Sewell is an artist who has been working at Portland Works since 2006. Since moving to a new large, light airy space in January 2016 her work has changed from figurative to abstract. One of the main themes in this new work is a sense of place and the space she occupies both externally and internally; her physical environment and personal inner space. She uses both photography and drawing as an integral part of her practice collecting details of shapes, colours, and textures of the environment she occupies. She is inspired by the work of abstract expressionism, exploring gesture, shape, line, light and dark to evoke emotion and movement in her work.
