When you visit Portland Works – whether as a volunteer, tenant, taking part in a Tuesday tour or hoping to rent a workspace, your first contact is likely to be with Donna Bate, our Building Manager.
Donna has lived in Sheffield for 20 years. When the campaign to save the Works from residential conversion was launched, she was one of 500 members of the community to come forward and buy shares in the newly founded social enterprise.
Her passion for local history led her to volunteer at the Works, where for three years she was part of the team who renovated workspaces for local craftspeople and the beautiful Makerspace, which now hosts Only Lucky Dogs Theatre as well as Portland Works community events.
That hands-on experience gave her practical insights into the challenges of maintaining and managing this historic building and Donna became Building Manager in 2017.
She looks after every aspect of the day-to-day management of the Works, ensuring tenants and volunteers are well supported and welcoming a wide range of visitors, from local secondary schoolchildren who arrive for work experience to journalists and local dignitaries who are interested in the way this grade 2* listed building has been reborn as an important community heritage location.
