Emma Hardy

Portland Works Tenant Director

Emma is a violin maker and repairer based at Portland Works. She is also the editor of the British Violin Making Association’s (BVMA) Quarterly Magazine, and in previous years she acted as one of the event co-ordinators for the annual Makers’ Day festival in Kings Place, London. In 2020 Emma co-founded Strings Together – a learning orchestra for adult string players in East London, which is still active today.
More recently Emma has been working on the short film project Folk Who Roam, with award winning director Emma Crome, in which they explore the connection between folk music, creativity and the importance of the right to roam in the countryside. To compliment this, Emma has also begun experimenting with using local woods and incorporating decorative elements in her making. When she’s not in the workshop, she spends much of her time out in the Peak District, walking, climbing and using the landscape as inspiration to inform her making.
Emma joined the Portland Works board of directors in 2024.
