Become a Tenant at Portland Works
Portland Works was built in the late 1870s as a cutlery factory, and remained as such until the late 1960s when it went into private ownership. It was bought in 2013 and now runs as a Community Benefit Society, owned by over 500 shareholders. We have over 30 makers and crafts people here, some making a living from what they produce.
Our tenants work here on a daily basis, so we are not a museum. However, we do want to share our building with the public and open up a couple of times a year for this purpose. People are interested in not just the history, but the people who work here today. We encourage our tenants, where practical, to join in on these open days. We also provide guided tours for small groups once a month and having a few minutes talking to some of our tenants makes this more of an event for them.
